Malaysia is a Constitutional Monarchy in Southeast Asia, a Federation made up of 13 States and 3 Federal Territories. The South China Sea separates Malaysia into West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaya) and East Malaysia (Borneo).


West Malaysia shares borders with Thailand in the north and Singapore in the south. It has 11 States and 2 Federal Territories. The bulk of Malaysia’s population and economic development are concentrated in West Malaysia.


East Malaysia is situated on the northern part of Borneo Island, sharing border with Kalimantan, Indonesia, in the south. It has 2 States (Sabah and Sarawak) and 1 Federal Territory (Labuan). East Malaysia is rich in natural resources, particularly, forestry, oil and gas reserves. 

As of 2019, Malaysia’s population is estimated at 32.6 million. The ethnically diverse population of Malaysia comprises Malays, Chinese, Indians, Iban, Kadazans and numerous indigenous people. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is one Asia Metropolis with a population over 5 million. Other well-known cities in Malaysia include Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Malacca and others.


Malaysia has a tropical climate with regular rainfall throughout the year. The vast rainforest, great biodiversity, long coastline, and mountainous interior have given Malaysia a unique landscape that makes tropical living as contrasting as it is diverse. The multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious society of Malaysia, a great melting pot of the traditional, the East and the West, have all come together to transform Malaysia  ‘Truly Asia’.


With strong economic growth, stable political system, outstanding healthcare and educational systems, and moderate cost of living by international standards, Malaysia has now emerged as one of the most livable countries in Asia.
